Blaise High School

Resource Base

What is the Resource Base?

The Resource Base is for students with Moderate Learning Difficulties and whose academic or personal development is currently at least 5 years behind their chronological age. We work with students with a range of special education needs including autism, speech and language, downs syndrome and ADHD, although this list is not exhaustive. We work closely with a range of outside professionals when required such as Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists etc. We also have a small sensory space to support those students with sensory needs.

The Resource Base runs from year 7 to year 11 with a class per year group and then there is a separate Post-16 provision. The aim of the Resource Base is for students to achieve appropriate academic qualifications and to develop life skills necessary to become a member of society. Class sizes are small with around 10 students in each class and there is a high level of additional adult support in each class depending on the cohorts needs.

The Resource Base students are very much part of the wider school taking part in whole school initiatives such as the Tutor Time Reading Program and Character Education and access some of the subject specific classrooms and being taught by those subject specialist teachers. Much of the rest of the school day the students are taught by a main class teacher who specialises in teaching students with special educational needs. Where appropriate some students will access mainstream lessons depending on their academic ability. We also run interventions in small groups usually led by the Teaching Assistants which are planned based on the cohorts needs.

We look for opportunities for students to develop their skills and experience new things by undertaking a range of school trips to support their classroom-based learning, and we offer an annual Residential Trip where students can develop their independence and life skills.

All students in our Resource Base have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) and if you would like to apply for a place you will need to talk to your child’s Primary School SENCO during their Annual Review and request our provision. The council will then hold discussions with us about whether our provision would be appropriate.

If you are interested in your child attending our Resource Base and would like further information please contact the Sammy Nutt, Head of the Resource Base via snutt@blaisehighschool.co.uk or call on 0117 9030159.

Alumni

When you leave us and go onto college or the world of work you will join our Resource Base Alumni. Every year we will send you and your family an Alumni Newsletter to tell you all about the last year at Blaise High School and in the Resource Base, sharing news and all the exciting things we have done. We will also share a form for you and your family to complete so you can tell us what you are up to now and we can use your successes to inspire our current and future students.
